‘Kill your darlings’ is a phrase you hear but when finally applied, it’s truth is profound. In this #tbt pic to the set of ‘The Wife’, a moment that I had envisioned and captured was so dear I based the whole edit around making that shot work. Artistic hubris, creative naivety or both, at the time I could not see the issues with the film. Flash forward to today, I decided to recut the film with my present understanding as an exercise. As much as I tried to save the shot - the one that I saw so clearly in my head when writing and was so precisely realised by my cast and crew - had to go. The pace of the film picked up, the dramatic intent had more clarity and another lesson was learned on this mad journey. Make mistakes, change your mind, take criticism but, most importantly, give yourself time to work it out. It will only make you and your work better. May the Force be with you.
